Alternatives to Traditional Education In one of our previous posts we were talking about three very interesting schools that differ from traditional institutions in one way or another. The first school is unique because students are not forced to study what they do not want to study and can choose what they want to do in school and even what time they want to come (this is especially attractive for those who cannot call themselves early birds). The second school is also unusual because it is hidden from people underground. Although it serves some rather pragmatic purposes, this location is still quite strange. The third school is more traditional in terms of its academic program and goals, but to get enrolled you should win a lottery. In this post we would like to talk a little more about such exclusive and unique schools that might impress you a lot. How Will This Subject Be Helpful in Real Life? This is the kind of question that students of Watershed school never ask. This school offers a very exciting program indeed: instead of taking all possible classes and memorizing words from textbook, students at Watershed get a unique opportunity not only to apply their skills in practice, but acquire these skills by practicing. Instead of sitting in a classroom and studying confusing and abstract algebra, students can improve their algebra skills by solving real life engineering problems. Every single core subject is not simple theory – they are based on different projects due to which students can really see how theory combines with practice. The school also offers children a number of interesting elective courses in filmmaking, climbing, photography, music, visual arts, etc. These electives, as well as courses in science (biology, chemistry, geology), are designed in such a way that students feel not just like students, but like future specialists because they are involved into various professional activities and projects. If students are studying architecture, they do not look at the pictures in textbooks – they walk around the town and examine existing buildings learning how different styles and methods work. Certainly, this is a brilliant school, but it is totally fine that it does not work for certain children. Studying at Watershed requires a student to be very independent and to be able to spend days and nights away from home (in case of organized trips and expeditions). Nevertheless, it is great that such a school exists and that it is open for children who study in middle and high school. But you should also keep in mind that such an amazing place is very costly – a year at Watershed costs more than $20,000. Yes, this is the price of unique education system. When Electronic Devices Are Everywhere and This Is Encouraged Today a lot of parents complain that their children are addicted to computers, tablets, and other numerous electronic devices. Children know how to use smartphones when they are two years old. By the moment they are teenagers, electronic devices are as important for modern children as air and water. Some schools make everything possible to help children get distracted from computers and spend more time reading, singing, playing musical instruments, and enjoying nature (for example, this is one of the biggest features of Waldorf schools). However, people forget that electronic devices, as well as the Internet, are not evil at all if children know how to use them to get knowledge. In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, there is a school where children’s dreams come true: there are no textbooks – only computers. This is the School of Future which was established in 2006. This school helps students go digital and understand technology very well. Some people might think it is not a good idea, but in fact we all live in the era of technology, and being good at this is essential and progressive. If you look at all the job offers requirements, you might notice that for each applicant it is necessary to have good Microsoft Office skills. Certainly, graduates of the School of Future will unlikely have problems with meeting this requirement. The good thing about this school is that students show high academic achievements in reading and mathematics. The disadvantage of the School of Future is that the enrollment is possible only if the candidate wins the lottery (the same situation we saw with Mountain Mahogany School in New Mexico). As you can see, schools that offer advanced learning and unique opportunities for children are getting more and more popular, but to become a student of such a school is extremely challenging – either it is quite costly, or you have to be lucky and win your chance to be enrolled. Perhaps, for some of us these schools seem to be too extravagant. Maybe, you think that traditional education serves the most important educational purpose – becoming a successful college or university student studying in a beautiful campus. However, there is a reason why people try to create new educational concepts and introduce some innovations – the progress is impossible without this approach. It is possible that these schools are not the best option for many children, but they give us an idea of how we can improve traditional schools to make them more effective. It is crucial to always give students an opportunity to challenge themselves and to feel their own progress – otherwise school does not make any sense. Schools are places that not only have to educate children but also to help them get interested in education.

Rules and norms come from family history, personalities, expectations, and values. Children entering a family impact both the family and child. The child must determine how to fit into this environment and the parents must make time, financial, and priority changes. The traditional family stages (marriage, birth of a first child, leaving home by the last child) are happening less often. Families are in transition - divorce, blended families, single parent, unmarried parents, foster parent, grandparents, and same-gender parents now may be raising the child. Three types of involvement are looked at in this chapter: Separation and Divorce, Blended Families, and Other Nontraditional Families with their impact on the child and the parents. Separation and Divorce The impact on children is often sadness, denial, and fear. The parental relationships have changed. Anger may show toward one or both parents. Male children are more apt to become aggressive, impulsive, and antisocial. The impact on parents stems from the fact that most mothers become the child?s custodial parent. Financial problems surface (mothers make half the income of fathers, many families exist below the poverty level because marketable work skills are missing or outdated. Discipline problems routinely occur in single parent families. Personal problems for single parents in the areas of employment discrimination, increased responsibilities, isolation, and loss of status are often reported. Blended Families Issues for children are: loyalties to noncustodial parent and other relatives, authority structure, role development and enforcement. Entering parents may be "perfect parents" and have all the answers. They cannot understand why they do not receive instant love and admiration. Negative feelings really increase when both spouses been children to the new marriage. The lines of authority must be resolved. Financial expectations and understandings must be accepted. Loyalty cannot be demanded by the new parent. The issue is to keep communications lines open as order is established in the new family. Other Nontraditional Families Identification of the many possible "other" families is beyond the scope of the book. Guidelines foe dealing with these families may not be available. The best advice is to recognize that each family is unique and to individualize your method of addressing their issues and needs.

Stereotyping can be characterized as the way to assign qualities to people in light of their investment in a social theory (McShane, 2010, p. 72). When you further investigate stereotypes, we find two different types. Prescriptive stereotypes and descriptive stereotypes. Prescriptive stereotypes depict the specific behavioral norms that individuals must uphold to avoid derogation or punishment by others (Gill, 2004). Descriptive stereotypes are perceivers beliefs about the characteristics of a social group and indicate the attributes, roles, and behaviors that describe that group (Gill, 2004). Collectively, stereotyping lays the groundwork for prejudice and discrimination. The social identity theory states that the in-group will discriminate against the out-group to enhance their own self image. It also clarifies how we perceive people through differentiation, homogenization and categorization. It is crucial to remember that in-groups are the groups you are apart of and that you associate with and out-groups are the groups that we dont normally identify with and my discriminate against. It was clear on in the case of Rochelle Beauport that she appreciated being an assistant brand manager. The position appeared to be more challenging and had a greater affected on the organizations profits than the new position, market resource coordinator. The market resource coordinator position was more classified as a behind the scenes job. Rochelle had the feeling that the new position was not the route to top administration in most organizations. Because of her skin colour she had also built up a perception that she was placed on reserve and felt that Syd Gilman thought she didnt deserve her previous position. What went wrong was that Syd Gilman thought that Rochelle would enjoy and appreciate the new position that had brought him to the high position he holds at the company. He felt as if offering the new position to her, would help her widen her experience and enhance her career at Hy Dairies, Inc. Mr. Gilman thought that his journey up the corporate latter through market resource coordinator would benefit Rochelle the same way. He believed that his experiences he would be able to share with Rochelle in the future. From Rochelles point of view she was confused that the job offered to her was at the same level or even a downgrade for he previous position. Since she had such a great year boosting the company sales, Rochelle was anticipating a promotion to a higher position. Hearing that Mr. Gilman offered her market resource coordinator she was shocked to say the least. She thought that the position was a downgrade and that Mr. Gilman didnt want her to get promoted because of her skin colo ur or even her gender. Rochelle wasnt aware that the new position had been given with positive implications that shed advance in the company the same way Mr. Gilman did as well. What other perceptual error is apparent in this case study? While reading the case study I noticed that the Halo effect, and others is apparent as well. The Halo effect is when you immediately form an impression on someone just from one trait/behaviour. Since you are blinded by the one trait/behaviour its hard for you to be able to see their other traits because you are so focused on one. For Rochelle when Syd Gilman offered her the new position she immediately thought he was trying to downgrade her because the market resource coordinator was known to be a sideline job. Just based on this interaction she felt as if she was being betrayed because of her differences, her thought was that Syd Gilman didnt want her to reach top management so he gave her market resource coordinator trying to make her think she was getting a promotion. Through the lack of communication What can organizations do to minimize misperceptions in these types of situations? In conflict situations, avoiding misunderstanding takes a lot of time and effort. Some considerations that the organizations or Mr. Gilman can do are: A.) The first is active listening. The goal of active listening is to understand the receivers as well as you understand yourself (McShane, 2010, pg 81). A message cannot be interpreted by the listener if he/she does not pay attention to what the speaker says. In this case, Syd Gilman should pay close attention to what Rochelle Beauport is saying. If need be, he should have the eagerness to discuss, clarify, or repeat anything that is unclear or seems unreasonable. It is possible that Syd is thinking that he understands Rochelle very well, but this is mere a confusion of interpretation and understanding. Because Syds goal is to give Rochelle the position where he started, he should first hear her side of story. A major problem is that Rochelle Beauport is interpreting Mr. Gilmans actions in a different way. You could go as far as saying she felt that she was underestimated. Because of the misunderstanding, there was an error in the communication between the two. To avoid this Syd Gil man should attempt to repeat back her case just as she has presented it to him. This will show that Mr. Gilman is listening (which suggests that Gilman cares about what Rochelle has to say) and that Syd Gilman understands what she has said or feels. It does not indicate that Gilman agrees with what she said, nor does Gilman have to agree. Mr. Gilman just needs to indicate that he does understand her perspective.

Kurt Lewin, a famous social psychologist, once wrote that a social organism becomes understandable only after one attempt to change it. It often happens that management's awareness for a new organization design emerges only after the start of an intensive change process. And even if it were possible for an omniscient manager to develop a master blueprint before introducing organization change, it is doubtful that other employees would readily accept the new design or have the required skills for making the design work. For these reasons, managers need to be as skillful at handling the question of how to introduce change as they are in diagnosing what needs to be changed (Adams and Spencer, 1986). This essay focuses on large-scale organization change, not on individual or small groups. The latter are obviously essential building blocks to organization change, but do not assure that a larger organizational unit will itself be transformed. Attention to additional variables beyond the individual and group is required in any organizational change, including such dimensions as multiple levels of authority, relationships between departments, environmental forces impinging on the organization, the climate of the organization, and the nature of the work flow that moves across departmental boundaries. In this paper I will discuss the concept of leadership as I have understood from my experience of what I have seen in a professional service firm. I will also discuss the change management process and my role in it. Objectives Of Organization Change If one were to "step back" after observing a number of organization changes, a variety of goals would seem to be present. These goals may be explicit and written down, or they may be implied by the actions of management. On the surface, the most common goals can be categorized under such labels as higher performance, acceptance of new techniques, greater motivation, more innovation, increased cooperation, reduced turnover, and so forth. Organizational changes are frequently directed at one or more of these general goals. Underlying these more obvious goals are usually two overarching objectives: Changes in an organization's level of adaptation to its environment, and Changes in the internal behavioral patterns of employees. Organizations are continually struggling to adapt themselves better to their external environment. Long before, for us to be able to communicate with our relatives from afar, we still need to write a letter and Walt a couple of days for It to be received ND a couple more of days to wait for the reply but with the emergence of these sites, communication was made easier and was taken to a different level. One of the most Influential and popular social networking site of today Is Faceable.From its birth back In Harvard university on February 4, 2004, Faceable has expanded and became the world's largest social networking site with a whopping total of 1,000,000,000 ( 1 Billion ) users as of today. What made the masses like the said site Is because of It's all in one feature. You can chat, play games, upload photos or videos and even send files, all at the same mime. It frees the users from the hassle of opening up multiple tabs and typing in websites that have one of the many features that Faceable has.But Like any other sites around the cyber world, the question for privacy arises and It had caused a great deal of problem over the time. It may look sophisticated yet it is still vulnerable to infiltration of hackers, which causes ruckus whenever the domain is hacked or temporarily closed down. Those type of issues caused Faceable to be also viewed as unsafe and more advertisements are made for the people to be aware how e should not place in private information and such in our profiles.Since Faceable had been around for ten years already and it had helped bridge long gaps between families and friends, at some point It also helped others to find the right person for them, the one they would want to spend their lifetime with. Faceable being used as well for dating online, it is essential not only for a Mass Communication major to study it but also for every individual that are still baffled as to how people are able to establish a close or intimate relationship with someone they barely knew other than hat Is stated on his/her Faceable profile.But then again, why is It that those people who are members of groups that were specially made for those who are willing to try online dating, all of the stuff written on their profile will impress you so much and the pictures are just too good to be true. It's as if people whom are currently dating through Faceable only seem to post good things on their walls, which again, makes me have this doubt over the reliability of the people we talk with online, moreover those who are a total stranger to us. 1 OFF Visual Communication In maintaining effective communication, utilizing visual communication is an important part of advertising and/or expressing ideas without actually saying them. Visual Communication can be best utilized in a classroom. Shapes and colors, charts and graphs, and cartoons and illustrations are examples of the approaches to visual communication. Visuals of business progress or digress should be clearly communicated through any visual communication that relates to the operation of the business. Visual communication can be learned and is used at an early age. For example, in a seventh grade math class, the students are taught the concept of order of operations. There is a message (acronym) that the students learn for each letter of the main math operations (parentheses, exponents, multiply, divide, add, and subtract). The message is Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally is given along with a visual (picture) of an aunt. When the students see the picture of the aunt, the students automatically remember the steps to order of operations to solve the math problem. Including colors in this message also helps the students to remember the first letters of the math words. Shapes and Colors Shapes and colors are used to accent and show contrasts in the message. According to Armar and JoAnna Almasude, web design, â€Å"Color considerations may also include the meanings of the colors and the moods that they could evoke. Viewers may have emotional, esthetic, biological responses to the colors of design. † (Web Design, 2002). Using colors effectively will convey a clear and concise message that is meaningful. In Appendix A, the acronym Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally uses shapes and colors to convey the message and show the process in using order of operations. Charts and Graphs Charts and graphs are examples of approaches to visual communication. Using charts and graphs in visual communication will convey the idea without having to include a lot of numbers. Including color in the charts and graphs will show the differences and result in the understanding of what the message the chart or graph is trying to convey. Appendix A also falls in the category of charts and graphs. The figure shows the process of order of operations by using shapes, colors, and, arrows to give the reader the direction on how to solve the problem using order of operations. Cartoons and Illustrations Cartoons and Illustrations are examples of approaches to visual communication. Using cartoons and illustrations will give the reader a picture of the idea that is being expressed. In using Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally, Appendix B uses a cartoon illustration of an aunt to help the students remember the process of order of operations. According to Professor Paul Lester, he stated, â€Å"Images are remembered by thinking about them in words. Whether pictures are not a language because there is no easily definable and reproducible alphabet or because the elements that make up a picture do not follow a discursive, linear flow, most experts agree that images are a collection of signs and as such, become a language when read in the mind† (Syntactic Theory, 2006). In other words, cartoons and illustrations are best used when related to words. This is reason why the students should be able to remember the process through vision and memory. In conclusion, visual communication plays an important role in visual and cognitive understanding. It can be used for almost every aspect of representation especially in the classroom. Shapes and colors, charts and graphs, and cartoons and illustrations are examples of the approaches to visual communication. I feel that cartoons and illustrations are the most effective for of visual communication. In using cartoons and illustrations to express ideas or thoughts, they can be conveyed without the use of words. However, including words will help show the correlation that what is seen is believed.

High School Sophomore Math Curriculum and Course Study The standards for mathematics education per grade vary by state, region, and country. Still, it is generally assumed that by the completion of the 10th grade, students should be able to grasp certain core concepts of math, which can be achieved by passing classes that include a complete curriculum of these skills. High School Sophomore Level Math Courses Some students may be on the fast track through their high school math education, already starting to take on the advanced challenges of Algebra II. The bare minimum requirements for graduating 10th grade includes an understanding of consumer maths, number systems, measurements and ratios, geometric shapes and calculations, rational numbers and polynomials, and how to solve for the variables of Algebra II. All students are expected to understand these concepts at this level. In most schools in the United States, students may choose between several learning tracks to complete the prerequisite four math credits needed to graduate High School. Math classes build upon each other, so each subject must be completed in the order they are presented: Pre-Algebra (for remedial students), Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. Students must reach at least Algebra I before completing 10th grade. Different Learning Tracks for High School Mathematics Every high school in America does not operate in the same way, but most offer the same list of mathematics courses that sophomores in high school can take in order to graduate. Depending on the individual students proficiency in the subject, he or she can take the expedited, normal, or remedial courses for learning mathematics. In the advanced track, students are expected to take Algebra I in the eighth grade, allowing them to start Geometry in ninth grade, and take Algebra II in the 10th. Meanwhile, students in the normal track start Algebra I in ninth grade, and typically take either Geometry or Algebra II in 10th grade, depending on the school districts standards for math education. For students who struggle with math comprehension, most schools also offer a remedial track that still covers all of the basic concepts students must comprehend to graduate high school. So many things to do that I don't even know where to begin. November 7th I landed at the Cancun international airport at twelve in the afternoon, one of the busiest airports I had seen besides John F Kennedy international airport in queens. When I arrived there were many sales associates persuading people to buy many different packages of activities such as dolphin riding, scuba diving, and snorkeling. There were sales associate's trying to sell cars, there was so much chaos I just wanted to leave. The hotel we had reserved had sent me and my family transportation to take us back to the hotel. the drivers were so welcoming, they greeted us and asked if needed anything before we left the airport. My family and I went in the white minivan the drivers had the music at a medium volume. The ride from the airport was quick but I could see a lot of the scenery of Cancun, many palm tree s and aqua blue water was the only thing that called my attention. We finally arrived to resort They offered mimosas and Pina colada upon our arrival, I wasn't able to drink the mimosas because the drinking age was eighteen, and I was just turning sixteen. it took them pretty long to get us situated since it was 22 of us and we needed 7 rooms. After an hour when we were all settled down and put our clothes away. The rooms were different to rooms I seen in a resort before, it had 2 floors on the first floor it had two queen size beds, and a bathroom with two closets and on the top floor there was a king size bed, walk-in closet and a bathroom with a tub and also a shower. We were all impressed on how big the room was. We all changed into our bathing suits to go down to the pool ,the beach was also couple steps away so I was going back and forth. The beach was so beautiful and calming, the water was so clear that you could actually see the pink of my nail polish on my toes. The cool white sand and the turquoise waters definitely made the beach one of my favorite areas to be around. The beached was filled with people dancing bachata and merengue, there was a dance contest going on but I was too shy to dance in front of everybody so I just watched. My cousins and aunts did join and they did a really good job. they actually came in second place. I loved the environment it was my first day and I already loved Mexico. After all the dancing and laughing we were all so hungry, we went to a restaurant inside moon palace, which is what the resort is called. "el manglar" it was Italian cuisine is where we decided to eat. Since my family was so big we also had a longer wait then everybody else. The wait was about 30 minutes. The food was so delicious I had Penne alla vodka. All the waiters were dressed in white suits and were very well educated, they spoke proper English which was very impressing since we were in Mexico. After we all finished eating many servers brought shots of tequila to our table even though I was still under age I took one without my mom knowing. We w ere the loudest group in the whole restaurant, my family stayed there so long that the waiter remembered each of our names. Three hours already passes and It was already late at night and I had to be up early the next morning because it was my grandma 70th birthday and my 16th birthday and we were going dolphin riding. At 7 am, I hurd my alarm clock ringing. I was so tired from the previous night that my eyes were glued together, as I was trying to wake up my twenty family members barge through the doors with a cupcake and singing happy birthday, throwing so many pictures as

One form of doing this is called â€Å"conditioning.† In an experiment run by the current author, a group of animals was taught that ringing bells were a precursor to food: a bell would ring, followed by them being given food every time. What this author found is that eventually, if one took away the food and only rang the bell, the animals in question would salivate anyways: it had been fundamentally programmed into their brain that these things were interconnected. This behavior was modified from the outside for a particular purpose. The ethical problem with this essay is the fact that it did not attribute ideas or programs to the people who they belonged to. For instance, I did not give Freud credit for id, ego, and super-ego theory, and failed to mention Pavlov at all in classical conditioning. Furthermore, it seems that I took credit for an experiment run by Pavlov and not by myself (though I suppose it is possible that I ran this experiment again). I think that this would cause the reader to either not believes in the integrity of my work (if they were familiar with the ideas involved) or else they would walk away with the mistaken impression that I originated those ideas. There are many different psychological theories that help to explain why people behave the way they do, and what can be done to influence behavior.
